  • The Evolution Of Bathing From Public Baths To The Walk In Shower

    Advertisment

Bathing – it is something that we have been doing for centuries. Over that time there have been many advances in the way people cleanse and the devices used to bath.

The first baths were very public affairs and built by the Roman’s, water wasn’t pumped to all houses, so instead baths, the size of small swimming pools were created for the lords and ladies to bath in. It was a long way off from any of the walk in shower technology that we have today.

The next evolution of bathing was something reserved for the rich and powerful, with personal baths in people’s houses. The baths were still very primitive, made from wood, a linen cloth would need to be laid over the wood to make sure that the bather didn’t get splinters.

Another step was the use of tin to construct baths. These again were very primitive and nowhere near as advanced as we have today with fixed taps and drains. Instead the bath was located in a room and then filled by hand before the bather could cleanse themselves. With no fixed pipe work, it was still a long way off the walk in shower system that we have today.

Nothing stands still and bathing certainly hasn’t, the next major development in bathing was probably the personal bath, which was available for all. Nowadays most households will have a bathtub in them, which is fixed in the bathroom with permanent pipe work and drainage; it has come a long way from the original baths that were once around.

This was an age when bathing was taking to the masses and it remained that way for several years without making a move forward. Eventually though showers were developed which provided a way for people to clean without the need to sit or soak in a tub. As time passed and the idea continued to evolve it also became a practical space saver for people who had little room in their bathroom.

Now more and more houses are converting their bathrooms to accommodate the walk in shower. It takes up less space, allows for quicker cleaning and is more economical on water, so financially beneficial too.

The walk in shower is the cleaning method of choice at the present time, but who knows what the next step will be, the latest modifications to showers at the moment are generally linked to the output of the water to the client. With power showers and multiple jets enhancing the cleaning experience.

Bathing will continue to evolve but if we have reached the pinnacle of bathing and it never moves on from the walk in shower then it wouldn’t be a bad thing.
