How to Create Embossed Backgrounds for Scrapbook Pages
ArtAdvertisment
If you are going to do a scrapbook or a layout that has very colorful pictures, you should really use a background that is monochromatic. It may seem too simple of a design, but it is possible to create a very nice, elegant theme that is inexpensive using only a stamp, clear embossing ink, and dark colored card. Usually, professional photographers use this type of dark background to allow the photographs to really be seen, and the same effect can be used in scrapbooks.
When you stamp with clear ink, it creates a very subtle change on the page; like a watermark is used on paper. It has a subtle, yet elegant effect, but if you want something that stands out more, then you can use clear embossing powder. What you do is stamp with the ink, then shake embossing powder on it while it is still wet. Then, you just tap the card on the side, as you would with glitter, and remove extra powder. The last step is to use a heat embossing tool. Then, the powder will sort of melt and then what will be left is a raised, clear version of the stamp.
This effect also looks great on light colored pages, and especially for Christmas pages, white on white with some glitter is a technique that will outline snow pictures beautifully.
It can be difficult on the computer to create a nice watermark. Sometimes, on the computer it looks perfect, then when you print it it can either stand out too much or not at all. It is difficult to achieve this effect on the computer. You can try to use this method and then scan it in at high resolution. There should be software on any computer in which you can change the tint, color, or saturation of the background which gives you more options.
If you have a group of pictures that have similar colors, it makes it easier to find a background. If you have a pictures with a lot of nature; trees, grass, etc, brown would be a great choice. In pictures with more cool colors, black or gray would be a better choice. You will want to use the same or similar backgrounds for both the left and right pages in your memory album. If you have two different pages viewed together it will not look very professional.
The bottom line is that your scrapbook’s purpose is to preserve your pictures that contain your memories that are important to you. Embossed, monochromatic pages are the best way to provide a simple, unobtrusive way to highlight those memories.
