The American dream might well be still alive and kicking, but these days there are many small business owners whose American dream has turned into an American nightmare. Of course, it has always required a little capital most of the time and a whole lot of determination to get a small business off the ground, and you just can not ever have too much determination. Without being determined to make your store, service or company work, it most likely will not. Even if you have the right idea, the right place and enough stock and enough capital to get started, if you do not work it the way it should be, it will fail.

Even when you have the determination and all of the other necessary things in place, you can still run into issues that are beyond your control like the recent and still on going economic crisis. Through no fault of your own, people can just stop spending. Your products can sit on the shelf or the calls stop coming in while your once full bank account goes dry. The only way you can ride out a storm like this is to be as prepared as you can be and keep ahead of the bills by having enough capital reserve or liquid assets on hand just in case you need it.

Sometimes there can be other problems that you could face. Your store location could be rezoned or the if you own the land your business sits on, the city, county or state might decide they have need of it and you could be literally forced to sell it to them for the price they think is fair market value. This was not a part of the American dream anyone had in mind. You can fight city hall, so to speak, but in most instances, it will probably not get you anywhere. This is an issue you could never have foreseen that you are practically powerless to do anything about and there just might not be a good answer for this one.

One recent business that has been plagued with issues by the FDA is the electronic cigarette companies. A lot of, but not nearly all of these merchandise sellers are small on line businesses just trying to make a living like everyone else. In this economy, if you are making a living, and it is a good product, you should be allowed to right? Well, the FDA has seized and returned many e cigarette shipments due to be delivered to these businesses even after just recently a judge deemed that the FDA had no right to do so.

It just goes to show that sometimes there is just no way to protect yourself from all the things that can go wrong when you are trying to make a success of your small business, but if you do your part, hopefully you will never run into any of these issues that you can not fight against.
